Bruce Power’s Unit 5 is now setting a long-run record every day it produces low-cost, clean electricity for Ontario’s families and businesses.
On Tuesday, March 5, the unit bested its previous record of 520 consecutive days of providing power to the province’s electricity grid. With its next planned maintenance outage scheduled for August, the unit has the opportunity to set a Bruce Power site record.
“Over the past decade, we have increasingly focused on the reliability of our equipment, and performing the right maintenance at the right time,” said Len Clewett, Bruce Power’s Executive Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer. “This has resulted in an unprecedented run of success for our four Bruce B units, each of which has set a unit record in the past six years.”
Aside from Unit 5’s ongoing record run, Unit 6 hit 556 days on Feb. 15, 2013; Unit 7 established its record of 487 days on Sept. 9, 2016, and Unit 8 set a unit and site record of 623 days on Feb. 13, 2018.
These four reactors also produce Cobalt-60, a life-saving medical isotope that is used to sterilize single-use medical devices across the world, while also fighting cancer.
Bill Walker, Minister of Community and Government Services and MPP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, congratulated the staff of Bruce B for this record-setting run by presenting a scroll from the Government of Ontario.
“Bruce Power’s safe and reliable operations help to make electricity affordable for Ontario families and provides good jobs to the people in our community,” Minister Walker said. “The new record run for Unit 5 of 521 consecutive days of operation is another great example of the hard work and dedication of the people who work at Bruce Power.”
