Fail to stop for school bus can result in major fine and demerit points

The Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a 37-year-old Barrie resident following an investigation into a vehicle that failed to stop for a school bus on Highway 26 in the Municipality of Meaford.

On November 5, 2026, officers investigated an incident in which a vehicle proceeded past a stopped school bus while its overhead red lights were flashing and its stop arm remained extended as children were boarding.

As a result of the investigation, one driver has been charged with Fail to Stop for School Bus under the Highway Traffic Act.

School bus safety remains an enforcement priority for Grey Bruce OPP. Through proactive enforcement and the investigation of reported violations, officers are committed to improving road safety and protecting children travelling to and from school.

Under Section 175 of the Highway Traffic Act, drivers must stop for a school bus when its red lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended. Drivers approaching from the rear must stop at least 20 metres from the school bus and remain stopped until the signals are no longer activated and it is safe to proceed.

Convictions for failing to stop for a school bus can result in fines of up to $2,000 and six demerit points.

The Grey Bruce OPP reminds motorists that a few moments of patience can help ensure children arrive at and return home from school safely.
