Community Matters: Bruce Power annual Outreach Program supports multiple causes

John Peevers, Director, Community and Media Relations

For many of us, the holiday season conjures up visions and memories of happy times spent with family and friends, comfort and warmth.

Unfortunately, there are many in our region who struggle for the basic necessities of life and the holiday season brings little joy.

The Grey-Bruce Poverty Task Force reports that demand at local food banks, which rose sharply during the pandemic, remains high as the cost of living continues to rise. Recent studies show that about one in six people in Ontario live in a household experiencing food insecurity.

Bruce Power, our supplier partners and employees are contributing to a number of community outreach programs in our surrounding communities and we urge everyone to give what they can to local charities to brighten the holidays for those in need.
Bruce Power and its Supplier partners’ annual holiday outreach program recently raised $40,000 through our annual toy and hamper fundraiser in conjunction with the United Way of Bruce Grey in support of these local groups:

• Port Elgin Salvation Army
• Kincardine Community Services, St. Anthony’s
• Walkerton Optimist Club
• Tiverton Lions • Ripley Lions
• Paisley Missionary Church
• Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation
• Saugeen First Nation
• Women’s Shelters in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties
• Dorrell Young Christmas Program, Bruce County
• Huron County Christmas Bureau
• United Way Grey County

The United Way of Bruce Grey relies on the support of the community to help the most vulnerable, so please consider making a donation at unitedwayofbrucegrey.

Our annual outreach program also donated $76,000 to be split between 38 area food banks. Another $56,000 in grocery store gift cards are being distributed through local
schools and women’s shelters to help ensure people have access to meals and necessities over the holiday season.

We were also able to provide $10,000 in warm winter clothing to Bruce Grey Child and Family Services and Huron County Children’s Services.

Bruce Power is proud of the role we play in safely providing clean, reliable power to the people, businesses and hospitals of Ontario and we’re excited about our contributions of cancer-fighting medical isotopes to the world market. But a key part of our mission as a company is to help to strengthen the communities in which our employees and their families live.

That’s why we donate more than $2 million every year to community charities and organizations and we are privileged to be in a position to do so. We rely on the support and commitment from our partners, employees and our communities and we encourage
everyone to help those in need when they are able to do so.

The Bruce Power Supplier Sponsorship Program aligns the company’s vendor partners with local, provincial and national nonprofit organizations that focus on Indigenous youth, health and wellness organizations, Canadian veterans and local Legions, community initiatives, and hospital foundations. Forty suppliers are supporting the program in 2022, which donates about $600,000 to these initiatives annually.
