The Liberal Party of Canada has acclaimed James Rice as its candidate in Huron-Bruce for the next general election.
“I am honoured to be joining a strong team and look forward to running a dynamic campaign whenever that time comes,” said Rice, noting that he would bring a fresh perspective as Huron-Bruce’s Member of Parliament. Speaking from the family farm of his partner, Katie Rice, outside of Walkerton, Rice thanked everyone who has reached out to express support for his candidacy and said he is excited to get to work.
“I look forward to listening to the concerns of people across Huron-Bruce, gaining their trust, and acting on their priorities as their next Member of Parliament.”
Having grown up in Bruce County, Rice graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Criminal Justice and Public Policy before continuing to law school at the University of Windsor. During his time in law school, Rice worked in the Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities Program at the Ministry of Community and Social Services before beginning a clerkship at the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories. There, Rice developed a deep appreciation for what makes Canada a great country while also being made aware of the wide array of challenges that rural and remote communities face.
Currently serving as an Assistant Crown Attorney with the Ministry of the Attorney General, Rice is passionate about social justice. As a former crown ward, he understands the need to advocate for those whose voices too often go unheard and has served with the Bruce-Grey Child and Family Services and the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada.
Before his career as a prosecutor, Rice was also involved with the Tiverton Agricultural Society and is a strong advocate for rural excellence. He understands the needs, hopes, and desires of youth and seniors alike and the importance of building a strong economy that works for everyone.
A father himself, Rice cited a desire to improve the lives of families in Huron-Bruce as his primary motivation for running in the next election. “The pandemic has shown the importance of strong leadership when it matters most. Whenever the next election occurs, voters face an important decision about Canada’s post-pandemic future ⎯ one that is forward-looking, progressive and focused on building communities up, or one that is remains focused on the past.”
