Flood watch issued by SVCA

The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority advises that the watershed received between 40 to 50 millimeters of rain between yesterday afternoon and this morning.

A Special Weather Statement issued by Environment Canada is currently in effect over much of Southern Ontario, as another wave of rain and thunderstorms will be passing over the region today, which could bring another 40 to 60 millimeters.

Heavier downpours caused by thunderstorms are possible in localized areas. So far, the water levels in our streams have risen by 25 to 35 centimeters over 18 hours.

Soils will already be saturated following yesterday’s rain, which means much of the rainfall today will end up as runoff into our streams, and water levels will likely increase at a much faster rate. Localized flooding can be expected on roadways and in low lying and/or flood prone areas. More extensive flooding is possible should the region receive rainfall amounts greater than what are currently forecast.

Municipal and County staff should monitor problem areas and prepare to close low-lying roads. Residents are reminded to stay away from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts, and dams. Elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks make these locations extremely dangerous.

This Flood Watch Statement will be in effect through Monday June 28, 2021, or until further notice. The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority will continue to monitor stream conditions and will provide updates as required.
