Former astronaut speaks about living in isolation – keep things in balance

Former Navy test pilot and Astronaut Captain Scott Kelly, was hosted by Bruce Power today (May 14) to give tips on living in isolation from one who spent a year in space.

According to James Scongack, Executive Vice-President Corporate Affairs and Operations, “We wanted someone who could bring a different perspective to the challenges people are living with now in this time of COVID-19.”

Kelly said that what he learned is that you focus on the those things that you can control and ignore those that you can’t.  “One of the most important things is to have a dedicate schedule so that everything is in balance.”

Tips on Living in Isolation from the Man Who Spent a Year in Space

Bruce Power is pleased to host a live presentation and Q&A with Captain Scott Kelly, a history-making NASA Astronaut and the first to complete a year-in-space mission. As the new normal brought on by the coronavirus takes hold in homes across the globe (working from home, self-isolation, video conferencing), Captain Scott Kelly offers expert advice on how to manage it all successfully. During his year in space aboard the International Space Station, Captain Kelly faced the ultimate isolation challenge—unable to go outside, ever. As he says in his New York Times op-ed, “When I went to sleep, I was at work. When I woke up, I was still at work.” In this virtual presentation, Kelly shares the seven strategies he followed in space to maintain a productive work schedule, to co-exist with his fellow astronauts, and to remain connected to family and friends.

“Connecting with family and friends is very important,” adds Kelly.  “Sharing with others can make you feel good.”

Get your information from trusted sources when it comes to the pandemic said Kelly … “Find reliable sources of information and followed their guidelines.  We are all together in this mission of battling this pandemic and that is our job.  Focus and put the fear behind you.  We have a lot of influence on our world and the climate.  Understand that this pandemic will one day be over.”

"If we can dream it, we can do it."
... Cpt. Scott Kelly

Scongack said that Bruce Power is offering a special lego puzzle of the International Space Station to the first 20 families who answer the question:  “How many millions of miles was Captain Kelly’s mission?”
