Fraud warning against remote computer access

The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is sending a fraud warning after receiving a report of a successful fraud on January 7, 2021.

A Municipality of Brockton resident received a call from an individual representing themselves as an employee of an established tech company. Once remote access was gained, the suspect completed a number of banking transactions. The total loss is estimated to be $20,000.

Modern, tech-savvy scammers have the ability to create very convincing scams. They won’t hesitate to use the name of a legitimate company in an effort to gain your trust and trick you into paying them.

Always be cautious with unsolicited email, phone calls, letters, even visitors at your door. Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it. Always be certain who you are dealing with before you ever consider sending money.
