Students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 are invited to share what home means to them in a national writing contest that is now open and accepting entries. Three grand prize winners will be selected from across Canada and receive a $30,000 grant to help their local Habitat for Humanity build a place to call home for a family in need of affordable housing.
Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce feels we could have a local winner right here in Grey and Bruce if our local students in Grade’s 4, 5, and 6 from schools in both the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board and Bluewater School Board participate. We know we have incredible talent and community philanthropy right here in our own backyard.
It’s free to participate and every single student who simply enters the Meaning of Home contest generates a $10 donation towards our local Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce.
In addition to the grand prize winners, there are prizes for nine runners up who will receive a $10,000 grant for their local Habitat build.
This unique contest provides an opportunity to connect with our youth and teach them not only the Habitat mission, but also the importance of giving back, non-profit charities, fundraising efforts and the need for affordable housing.
Last year, over 70 students participated locally from Grey and Bruce. This participation generated over $700 for Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce. Now, more than ever, we understand the significance of what “home” truly means and this contest encourages children to write about just that. Home became vital safeguard for children and families during the height of the pandemic.
Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce Partnerships Manager, Lisa Campbell has been promoting the contest locally since December and invites teachers and parents to connect with her to obtain resources or arrange a virtual or in-person visit with their class to learn more lisa@habitatgreybruce.ca .
Submissions are being accepted online at meaningofhome.ca January 9, 2023 until February 24, 2023 with winners to be announced in May 2023.
The Meaning of Home contest would not be possible without the generous support of Founding Sponsor Sagen and award sponsors, Urban Systems Foundation, Home Trust and FacetoFaceGames.com
