On April 28th, 2025, we recognize the National Day of Mourning for Persons Killed or Injured in the Workplace, a day officially recognized nationwide each year.
Marking the somber occasion, all flags on municipal flagstaffs throughout the community of Kincardine will be lowered the morning of Monday, April 28th, 2025, until Tuesday morning, April 29th, 2025. This is to honour those who have suffered work-related disability, disease, and death.
This day was chosen in 1984 by the Canadian Labour Congress and coincided at the time with the 70th anniversary of the day the Ontario Worker’s Compensation act that was approved by the government. It became part of national legislation on February 1st, 1991.
This day is also known globally as Workers’ Memorial Day, with around 100 countries commemorating the occasion around the world.
Every worker has the right to return home at the end of every workday. Take time today to reflect on the safety of your own workplace practices. By working together, we can prevent worker injuries and deaths before they occur. For more information about the National Day of Mourning, visit www.wsib.ca/en/day-of-mourning.
