Dear Senator Cramer:
I saw your interview with Katie Simpson on CBC Power and Politics on August 7. I was glad to see that KaMe asked you if you truly understood that when Canadians “see Donald Trump escalate this, that there is a sentiment across this country that people want to dig in and fightback.” You said you understood this sentiment. Good.
I appreciated your observation about being a border state and our great shared history. I
believe you when you hoped for progress. I, too, hope for a resolution of the disputes initiated by your President.
When my father’s family came up to Saskatchewan, some were in North Dakota. My
grandmother would go to North Dakota for schooling for the first few years. We were close.
Also, a few decades ago, when my grandmother’s brother was dying, his son drove almost
straight through from San Diego to Saskatchewan. When he reached the border, it was closed. The border guard was in a nearby cafe. My relative explained the situation. The guard gave him the keys to the border and asked him to return them on the way back. That’s our history, our shared history, and love of and for each other that President Trump is destroying.
So it is in that spirit that I ask you to do everything possible to reach a reasonable resolution.
