The Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII) is pleased to welcome the new lead for collaborative municipal innovation in Bruce County, Becky Smith. From the NII office in Saugeen Shores, Smith will lead operations of the Municipal Innovation Council (MIC)—a unique, leading-edge platform for like-minded municipalities to come together to build smarter, stronger and more resilient communities.
Smith replaces former Innovation Officer Dave Shorey, who was instrumental in establishing the MIC and building a basis for collaboration among different governments.
Coming to the role from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), Smith’s work focused on communications and developing relationships with local and regional stakeholders. Prior to joining the NWMO, she worked in various capacities in the federal government that centred on engagement, communications and bridging connections with the grassroots.
“I look forward to working with Becky to continue the important mandate of the Municipal Innovation Council in the region,” said Bruce Wallace, NII President and CEO. “Her experience and strong relationships across the county will serve the member municipalities well as they implement their innovation projects.”
Wallace added: “Our sincere thanks to Dave Shorey, who helped shaped the organization and set it on a path to success. I wish him all the best in his new role with Georgian College.”
The MIC is made up of representatives from Arran-Elderslie, Brockton, Bruce County, Huron Kinloss, Kincardine, Northern Bruce Peninsula, Saugeen Shores and South Bruce.
