From the 1800s to the 1930s, more than 33,000 children in the U.K. were sent to Canada through the Dr. Barnardo Homes program.  Many were orphans while other simply came from families too poor to keep them.

While many expected a better life, they soon found themselves on farms and in domestic labour situations, with many mistreated.

Bill Streeter, local historian, tells the tale from first-hand knowledge as the descendent of a Baranardo boy, his grandfather George Streeter who was sent to Canada at the young age of ten.

In his recent book, ‘The Family Chair’, he explains how many came to Bruce County where they shaped local history.

Streeter will be speaking at The Walker House Museum in Kincardine at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17th with admission by donation.
