Around 300 senior citizens in all corners South Bruce received hand assembled care packages on Friday, February 19th.
Launched in early January by the Municipality, the initiative invited the public to sign up a relative or friend over the age of 65 to receive a care package.
“The winter can be more challenging than other times of the year, especially this one with the impacts of the pandemic. The care packages were a simple way for the community to come together and show our elders that they are important and being thought of through these difficult times,” said Robert Buckle, Mayor of South Bruce.
“The NWMO is pleased to support this wonderful initiative and we truly hope all residents have a safe, healthy and enjoyable year ahead,” said Becky Smith, Regional Communications Manager for the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO).
The funding for this program was provided by the NWMO’s Corporate Sponsorship Program, which focused on supporting communities during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The Corporate Sponsorship allowed the Municipality to purchase the majority of the items found in the care packages from local South Bruce vendors, including Gay Lea Teeswater Country Store, Harleys Pub & Perk, The Healing Arc, Klein’s Maple Syrup, Liesemer Home Hardware, Limoncello Treats, Mildmay Cheese Haus, Route 58, and Voisin’s Maple Products. A donation of razors and antibacterial wipes was also received from Edgewell Personal Care, and both the Municipality and the NWMO contributed items.
“This program is an example of positive community spirit here in South Bruce. With the impacts of the pandemic, it was great that several small businesses across South Bruce were supported through the care packages, not to mention the seniors who received them and had their day brightened,” said Nicole Wise, Past President of the South Bruce Community and Business Association and local small business owner.
In a letter addressed to the recipients, Mayor Buckle thanked all the seniors for choosing South Bruce as a place to live, and invited them all to “… stay involved in our welcoming municipality in whatever way you can, so that we can build a great legacy for the next generations that will also call it home.”
