Allan Thompson, Federal Liberal candidate for Huron Bruce, Senior Fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and journalism professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, recently visited Rwanda on the 25th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide.
Thompson joined in the commemoration from April 6-12 when he re-visited and re-connected with former colleagues from the journalism school in Rwanda.
The Rwanda events are the starting point for Allan’s new CIGI Press publication –
Media and Mass Atrocity: The Rwanda Genocide and Beyond
The Rwandan genocide under the Hutu-led government saw approximately 800,000 Tutsi Rawandans massacred, about 70% of the Tutsi population.
According to Thompson, a key to letting the world know what is going on in countries experiencing the ravages of war, is to ensure that local journalists are trained to tell the stories of their own countries. (Global News interview)
