Trillium Insurance and Waterloo Brick Brewing once again co-sponsored the annual Crime Stopper Golf Tournament on Friday, June 1st at Saugeen Golf Club.
The 26th annual tournament was filled to capacity with some 156 golfers taking part in the fundraiser for Crime Stoppers Grey Bruce.
The event is the largest fundraiser for Crime Stoppers, which is a completely volunteer-driven service and funds raised go toward the on-going operations of the organization.
“This is a major fundraiser for Crime Stoppers as we are a volunteer organization and depend on events like this to raise funds in order to keep Crime Stoppers going,” said Crime Stoppers Board Chair, Betty Bender. “If it weren’t for our volunteers and the support of the communities and this tournament, there would be no Crime Stoppers. We are also very appreciative of those who come out in support including our special celebrities.”
This year’s celebrities included special guest speaker Brian Williams, well-known sports broadcaster who has covered the Olympics, the Queen’s Plate Thoroughbred race and Figure Skating and is a recipient of the order of Canada. Williams had the audience rolling with laughter as he recounted his experiences with the many sports celebrities over the years and his travels around the world as a Canadian announcer.
Among the sports celebrities also in attendance were NHL(ers) Curtis Sandford and Kurtis McDermid, retired NHL players Paul McDermid and Les Binkley, Referee Kendrick Nicholson and retired NHL Goalie Billy Smith, who was named as one of the 100 greatest NHL players.
Billy Smith, who took the Islanders on to win four Stanley Cups, was also a guest speaker who took his audience behind the scenes and into the dressing room with raucous stories of fellow hockey players.
