An independent, non-profit organization that supports families with children who are ill or injured, Ronald McDonald House serves families with a variety of critical programs and essential services to help families in need. Currently, The London House is undergoing an expansion from 40 to 80 bedrooms — the largest expansion in the chapter’s history, doubling the number of families that can stay close to their child through critical times.

“Bruce Power’s supplier partners highly value the operating principle that Ronald McDonald House SWO holds – that no family should have to choose between being at their child’s bedside and having somewhere to sleep, eat, and hold themselves together while they’re trying to support their child,” said Maggie Tieman, Director, Community and External Affairs, Bruce Power. “By supporting Ronald McDonald House SWO, basic necessities such as lodging, meals, emotional support and other amenities are all made available at no or low cost to families to ensure nobody is turned away in their hour of need.”

Families travel an average of 400 kilometres to reach the London program sites for specialized pediatric care. Once at Ronald McDonald House, families receive care that includes psychosocial support, home-cooked meals, laundry, a private bedroom, and a community of other families living the same reality. Last year, due to lack of space, 500 patient families were unable to stay at Ronald McDonald House in London.

“We may not share a postal code with the businesses and individuals who live, work and play in Grey-Bruce, but what we share is much deeper – a commitment to protecting, uplifting, and nurturing families so they can ensure the best outcomes for their children”, said Rachel Macaulay, Vice-President of Philanthropy and Community Relations at Ronald McDonald House Charities, Southwestern Ontario. “We are grateful that the Bruce Power suppliers recognize we are their local charity and have chosen to give generously to build towards a future where no family is turned away.”

Matthew Chater, CEO of Ronald McDonald House, Southwestern Ontario, added, “Ronald McDonald House exists because two out of three Ontario families must travel long distances to seek medical care for their children. When Grey-Bruce families arrive in London, they depend on our house for logistical and socioeconomic relief that allows families to focus on what is most important – being together. Behind our big red doors, your region’s kids and caregivers discover a community that provides truly wrap-around care for the whole family. We could not do this without the generous support of the Grey-Bruce region, and we are grateful to the suppliers for showing up in this remarkable way.”

About Ronald McDonald House SWO:  No family should have to choose between being at their ill or injured child’s bedside and having somewhere to sleep, eat, and hold themselves together. Ronald McDonald House SWO provides a safe-haven to make sure they don’t. Two of three Ontario families travel long distances to access life-saving care for their kids. When they do, they are greeted by a safe, loving home away from home that alleviates their socioeconomic, logistical, and emotional burdens. Through three program sites, Ronald McDonald House provides children and their caregivers with private accommodations, home-cooked meals, psychosocial support, and the sense of community that only patient families can understand. Since 2019, demand for our services has outstripped our capacity. Through THIS PLACE IS EVERYTHING, our capital redevelopment campaign, our London House will grow from 40 to 80 bedrooms, doubling the number of families served annually and building towards a future where every family has what they need to ensure the best health outcomes for their child.
