Fatalities over Christmas in Huron County

House Fire claims one life

Just before 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 North Huron Fire Department, Huron County Paramedic Services and officers from the Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment and Wingham Police Service responded to a house fire located on Josephine Street North just outside of Wingham.

Upon arrival emergency responders found the single dwelling home fully engulfed by fire. Fire crews entered into the home whereupon they searched the residence and located a male that was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deceased has been identified as Steven CHRISTIE, 55 years of age from Morris-Turnberry.

Members from the Huron OPP Crime Unit along with officers from the Mount Forest OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS) Unit continue to investigate with the assistance of the Coroner’s Office and the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM).

Foul play is not suspected.

Fatal crash claims two lives

A single vehicle fatality crash that occurred Christmas day west of Clinton claimed two lives.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Huron County OPP, Huron County Paramedic Services and Central Huron Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the crash scene located on Telephone Road west of Fish & Game Line. Upon arrival emergency personnel located a crossover utility vehicle that had left the roadway, overturned and became submerged in water.

Both the driver and passenger were removed from the vehicle and transported to hospital where they were later pronounced deceased.

The deceased have been identified as 72-year-old George RICH and 69-year-old Mary WOOD both from Central Huron.

Telephone Road between Parr Line and Fish & Game Line remained closed while investigators from the OPP West Region Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) Team investigated.
