Members of the Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) recently took part in the annual Canada Road Safety Week which took place from May 14, 2024, to May 20, 2024. The campaign is aimed to reduce collisions by focusing on impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and seatbelt use. The campaign included increased enforcement and public awareness.
South Bruce Peninsula and Northern Bruce Peninsula drivers saw aerial enforcement throughout the long weekend.
Over the course of the seven-day campaign, Grey Bruce County OPP officers laid 200 charges and gave 89 warnings. Some of the charges are:
- Impaired driving – 4
- Speeding 1-49 km/hr – 124
- Stunt driving – 5
- Fail to properly wear seatbelt – 15
Arial enforcement laid the following charges:
- Speeding 1-49 km/hr – 4
- Unsafe passing – 2
- Passenger fail to properly wear seat belt – 1
The remainder of charges fall under the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Act, Automobile Insurance Act and Canada Shipping Act.
OPP officers will continue to focus throughout the summer on the “Big Four” factors in serious and fatal collisions: aggressive driving, inattentive driving, impaired driving, and lack of occupant restraints. This includes the major highways and all other roads.
The OPP would like to remind road users that officers are committed to traffic safety enforcement and education year-round. This dedication promotes safe driving habits, making our roads safer for everyone.
