Grey Bruce students invited to submit poetry

Words Aloud 2019 and John Diefenbaker Secondary School (JDSS) are celebrating ‘National Poetry Month’ together.

Owen Sound Poet Laureate, Lauren Best and ‘Words Aloud’ Artistic Director, Kaitlyn Neath brought poetry to the students.

In honour of National Poetry Month, ‘Words Aloud’ connected with JDSS English teacher Jenna Durnin and put together an afternoon of performance and writing for and with the students.

Best and Neath presented their poems and had an informal Q and A to explain the Poet Laureate program and the process of creating poetry. The students were then led by Best in a workshop with a variety of thought provoking activities to encourage them to put together a group poem. With light-hearted enthusiasm they then shared their creations with each other.

‘Words Aloud’ ended the day by encouraging the students to participate in a poetry competition in early May in Durham, a collaboration with the Durham Art Gallery, home of the Words Aloud Festival for 16 years.

Cash prizes will be awarded as well as an opportunity to perform on the Main Stage at ‘Words Aloud’ in November. Youth from across Grey-Bruce are invited to participate.
