Ben Lobb, Member of Parliament for Huron—Bruce issued the following statement today, March 30th (2023), “Yesterday, the House of Commons voted on my Private Member’s Bill, C-234, An Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act at Third Reading. Bill C-234 was adopted with 176 votes to 145 and will now go to the Senate for debate and review.
I am grateful to my colleagues for their support of this important piece of legislation, as well as the numerous agricultural producer and grower associations and others who provided valuable input at the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food. Bill C-234 seeks to exempt on-farm natural gas and propane fuel use from the carbon tax, which will save thousands of dollars for Canadian farmers that rely on these fuels every day for their essential operations.
The Conservative Party of Canada understands that farmers put food on our tables and shouldn’t be financially punished for doing so. Unlike the Liberal Government, we recognize that farmers are some of the best stewards of the land and environment and proactively contribute to climate protection initiatives in their business practices.
I look forward to working with my colleague the Honourable David Wells, Senator for Newfoundland and Labrador, who will be sponsoring the Bill as it goes through the Senate. Canadian farmers are counting on the support of senators to ensure Bill C-234 comes into effect.”
