Impaired driving offences skyrocketing

Grey Bruce OPP reported a concerning and troubling 50 percent increase of drivers charged with impaired driving throughout the detachment area, from the previous year.

From January 1, 2019 to September 19, 2019 Grey Bruce OPP officers have charged 114 drivers with impaired driving.

In 2018, for the same time period, 63 drivers were charged with the same offence. That is a disturbing 81 percent increase (81%).

“This dangerous and destructive behavior by some drivers is truly disturbing. The privilege of holding a driver’s licence in Ontario, can, and will, be removed from anyone who drives a motor vehicle while impaired. Grey Bruce OPP are committed to public safety on our highways. Through pro-active traffic stops, RIDE programs and traffic complaints from the public, we will continue to pursue safe roads for our communities,” said Inspector Martin Murray, Grey Bruce OPP Detachment.

IMPAIRED BY DRUG AT THE DRIVE-THRU

A timely call from a restaurant employee helped police remove a drug impaired driver from the roads last night (Sept. 22) in Goderich.

Just before 11:00 p.m. on September 22, 2019 Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a call about a possible impaired driver that was attempting to order food at a restaurant drive-thru.

Officers immediately responded to the area of the restaurant and were able to locate the suspect vehicle as it drove out onto Picton Street. A traffic stop was conducted and while speaking with the driver the investigating officer noted the driver was exhibiting signs that he was under the influence of a drug and was arrested for Impaired Operation. The driver was then transported to the Huron OPP Detachment for an evaluation conducted by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). At the end of the evaluation the DRE determined the driver was impaired by a drug. A check on the driver’s licence status of the driver also determined the driver currently held a suspended driver’s licence.

A 50 year-old male from Lucknow has been charged with Impaired Operation and two counts of Drive While Under Suspension. The accused was later released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for October 21, 2019 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich.
