New Warden for Bruce County comes with experience

Bruce County Council acclaimed Huron-Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan as Warden for the fifth time at Thursday’s inaugural session. Twolan also served as Warden in 2007 and 2015 to 2017.

In his address, Warden Twolan says 2019 will be a “ramp-up” year for Bruce County, as many more contractors, workers, and suppliers move into the area to support Bruce Power’s Major Component Replacement (MCR). “I’m excited to be sitting at the table as our communities prepare for unprecedented growth and development,” Twolan says.

“County council and the lower tiers of government need to ensure the infrastructure and social services are in place to support that development. The need for social housing, especially, will be a priority issue for me in 2019.” Some social housing is already planned for Kincardine – where a 10-unit complex is proposed – but Twolan says more affordable housing needs to come to Saugeen Shores and other communities in Bruce County.

Twolan also said he is excited for the Nuclear Innovation Institute to find a permanent home in Saugeen Shores. “The Nuclear Innovation Institute is going to a world class facility, showcasing innovative technologies and attracting the brightest educators in those fields.”

A/CAO Marianne Nero commented, “The Office of Warden is achieved through a vote of peers on County Council. It is an honour to receive this chain of office from your peer group.  I wish to congratulate Mayor Mitch Twolan and look forward to the year ahead.”

Warden Twolan is the 134th person to hold the position of Warden for Bruce County since its beginnings in 1867. Paul Eagleson, Past Mayor of Arran-Elderslie held the position last year.
