Nuclear Innovation Institute gets green light to operate as a not-for-profit corporation

The Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII) announced today that it has received approval from Innovation, Sciences and Economic Development Canada for federal incorporation as a not-for-profit corporation.

The announcement is the latest step in moving ahead NII’s vision as Canada’s leading-edge nuclear applied research hub and centre of excellence for talent development and business innovation. NII brings together industry leaders, academia, government and community to use their collective expertise and knowledge to identify opportunities for advancing new technologies and new economic growth.

“Receiving federal approval for incorporation allows NII to begin to carry out its vision and begin to secure members. We also look forward to establishing innovation teams to deliver on our mission and initial areas of focus,” said NII President Frank Saunders. “Today’s announcement is the first of several we expect to make in the coming months as we begin to put programs in place around NII, including hosting an official launch event later in the summer.”

Today’s announcement comes on the heels of the County of Bruce’s adoption of an action plan for the Trades and Skilled Workforce Secretariat, a key component of the NII’s Talent Development and Training Coordination Hub.

Last month, the NII introduced the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Nuclear Research Centre in Glasgow as its first international partner. NII is also partnering with LEAD Canada on a Big Data Summer Camp for students in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties to be held August 19-30 at the Walkerton Clean Water Centre.

“We’re excited about the recent activity that’s happening within the NII, including today’s announcement, and look forward to what lies ahead,” said Bruce County Warden Mitch Twolan. “The action plan, Big Data Summer Camp and incorporation all represent opportunities for the region’s residents and businesses to benefit from what the Institute will be bringing to our local youth and broader communities.”
