Obituary: Michael Snobelen – June 1, 2024

Michael Snobelen

It is with deep sadness we share the news of the passing of Michael Snobelen, co-founder of Snobelen Farms.

Mike passed away peacefully at home in Goderich, Ontario, on June 1, 2024. He was 76 years old.

In 1971, with the closest grain elevator being an hour away in Hensall, Mike saw the opportunity to begin to build a grain elevator with the intention of purchasing grain from local farmers. He began by constructing two concrete silos on the home farm near Ripley, which still stand today.

In 1997, he began exporting non-GMO soybeans to Europe, opening new doors for Ontario producers. Some of our first customers in Belgium and England are still part of our business today.

Mike was a visionary leader and his dedication and hard work helped Snobelen Farms become one of the largest family owned and operated grain elevator businesses in the province. He was a champion of his family, his business and his community. He will be missed immensely.

“Our dad was a hardworking individual who led by example. A visionary businessman who spent a lifetime making opportunities out of obstacles,” says Sam Snobelen, President, Snobelen Farms Ltd.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Lucknow Community Centre. Donations to the Ripley-Huron Legion and the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
