- Premier at Pickering: Ontario Premier Doug Ford visited the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in June, shortly after the provincial election, to reaffirm supportfor the station’s continued operations until 2024, including saving electricity customers money and preserving jobs. “OPG’s publically owned nuclear plants, including Pickering, are the low-cost, reliable and clean power producers of this province,” said Jeff Lyash, OPG’s President and CEO. “By keeping this public asset open we will save Ontario’s electricity customers $600 million in costs that would have to be added to everyone’s monthly bills while avoiding carbon emissions equal to that of 3.4 million cars.”
- In with the new: The rebuilding of Darlington’s Unit 2 reactor is officially under way, as staff begin installing 480 new calandria tubes, which insulate fuel channels from the cooler moderator. Refurbishment of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station is Canada’s largest clean-energy project, ensuring continued safe and reliable power for Ontario homes, schools and businesses for 30 more years. The project remains on time and on budget.
- Green financing: OPG in June closed a $450-million green bond issuance, a first-of-its-kind financing for the Canadian energy sector. Proceeds will be used to finance hydroelectric projects that produce low-cost power free of carbon emissions, such as the Peter Sutherland Sr. Generating Station in Northeastern Ontario.
