What is Men’s Shed? a movement in camaraderie for men

Submitted by: Gerry Tilmans, Team Leader

Some of you may have read or heard about something called a “Men’s Shed” but what is it? They are independently operated groups that help men’s health by combating loneliness and depression by interacting with other men.

There are no expectations other than to come out, have a coffee or tea and enjoy each other’s company. As is often the case, ideas pop up for road trips, hiking, scale model building, and much more. Some groups may have an actual shed that they meet in or have access to, to take on projects. Many Sheds find their focus doing woodworking, no experience necessary.

Some Sheds, such as Bruce Men’s Shed meets at the Royal Canadian Legion in Lion’s Head and the Saugeen Shores Men’s Shed meets in the Chantry Centre in Southampton for example over coffee and conversation.

Men’s Shed Kincardine is holding their inaugural meeting on Wednesday, September 30th at 9:30am. Come join us at Legion Branch 186, 219 Lambton St Kincardine. There will be coffee, tea and snacks with a presentation outlining the Shed movement.

Bruce Men’s Shed:  Drop in for Coffee Monday every week 9am-11am at Canadian Legion Branch 202, 6 Hellyer Road on Highway 6, 4 km north of Ferndale. Doors open at 8:45. Our next monthly meeting is Saturday, September 19 from 9am-11am where we talk about past and upcoming projects, so please come out. In Wiarton, Bruce Men’s Shed coffee gathering is every Coffee Wednesday at 10 am at 451 Frank street, Matthew Mutch hosting. If you would like further information on how to get involved with the Men’s Shed movement, please contact us at brucemensshed@gmail.com or call Gerry at (519) 793–3005.
