Winterhawks sweep Bruce County rivals

 

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks secured road wins against each of their Bruce County rivals this weekend.

On Saturday night, the Winterhawks scored four unanswered goals in the third period to take a 5-1 victory over the Ripley Wolves.
It was a historic night for Winterhawks goaltender Jeff Flagler, who now stands alone in the Winterhawks record books.Flagler recorded his 39th career win, making Flagler the new Winterhawks all-time wins leader.The Winterhawks struck right off the bat in Ripley, with Mike Fiegehen making it 1-0 for the visitors at 2:14 of the first period, with assists to Justin Donnelly and Chad Jones.Ripley had a pair of power plays in the first, before the Winterhawks had their own set of power plays, but neither team could find the twine, and it remained a 1-0 Winterhawks lead after one.Ripley again had a pair of power plays in the second period, but Flagler and the Winterhawks penalty killers held them at bay, as the 1-0 lead held on as they headed to the third period.The Wolves evened things up as ex-Hawk Adam Alexander knotted the score at 1-1 just 38 seconds into the final frame, but the Winterhawks immediately answered back.Miles MacLean put the ‘Hawks back on top just over two minutes later on a goal assisted by Lauchlin Elder, who put the Winterhawks up by two less than a minute later on an unassisted goal to make it a 3-1 Winterhawks lead.Andy Fracz recorded his first goal of the season on the power play at 11:19, with Nick Quaid and Fiegehen assisting to make it 4-1 Winterhawks.Luke Pither put an exclamation mark on a big win with a shorthanded goal from Elder at 17:11 to make it a 5-1 victory for the Winterhawks.Flagler made 31 saves for the win, passing Nick Goetz for top spot on the Winterhawks all-time wins list.

The Winterhawks turned around on short rest and travelled back to Huron-Kinloss on Sunday afternoon to face the Lucknow Lancers.               
MacLean scored twice and added two assists as the Winterhawks cruised to a 6-2 win over the Lancers.Lucknow opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game on a goal by Evan Ducharme.The Winterhawks answered back at 12:49 of the opening frame, with MacLean picking up his first of the night, from Pither and Josh Hopkin to make it a 1-1 tie.Matt Shields gave the Winterhawks a lead they would not relinquish two minutes later when he made it 2-1, with Fiegehen and Brock Pinnell assisting.That score held until early in the second period, when MacLean and Fiegehen scored power play goals two-and-a-half minutes apart to take full control of the game.MacLean’s marker came at 4:13 of the second, from Pither and James McHaig, while Fiegehen’s goal came at 6:59, with assists from Shields and Andy Mitchell.Elder added an even-strength marker of his own at 10:20, from MacLean and Medric Mercier to make it a 5-1 Winterhawks lead.Lucknow answered back with one of their own to finish off the second period with a 5-2 score.The third period was largely uneventful until the final minute, when Pither finished off the scoring from MacLean and Pinnell to make it a 6-2 final for the visitors.Eric Peicheff picked up the win in the Winterhawks net.The win improves the Winterhawks record to 7-3-1, capping off a four-point weekend with wins over both Bruce County rivals after a 5-1 win in Ripley the previous night.The Winterhawks return home for a pre-Christmas game with the Shelburne Muskies this Friday night, December 23rd with a special early 7:30 p.m. start time at The Plex.
