Bruce Power donates to community initiatives in Brockton

Bruce Power will provide funding for two community initiatives in the Municipality of Brockton to promote mental and physical wellness and downtown improvement, as part of the $1 million Be a Light: Beating COVID Together campaign.

The municipality will receive funding for an ice skating oval that is planned for the Lobies Park Campground, located near Walkerton’s downtown. The funding will assist with the lighting, equipment and guard shack upgrades for staff to monitor and register guests in order to maintain COVID-19 protocols. The outdoor skating facility will be open as the weather allows.

The company will also assist the municipality with transforming a vacant space in downtown Walkerton. The Durham Street Park development will connect a municipal parking lot with downtown shops and restaurants. It will support local events and become a gathering space for programming, as well as a communal eating space. It will also provide a place for historical recognition, local art, and possibly a water feature that will speak to the town’s growth and leadership in drinking water excellence, said Sonya Watson, Brockton’s Chief Administrative Officer.

“The recent Hometown Christmas Market at the Durham Street Park site was a huge success and we intend to support the business community with the opportunity to hold these types of events regularly in this space, to support outdoor shopping and business continuity,” said Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody. “With Bruce Power’s assistance, we now have an excellent head start on these exciting community initiatives that will certainly benefit our residents.”

“We were very disappointed when we had to cancel our 2020 Block Party in Brockton, due to the pandemic,” said John Peevers, Bruce Power’s Director of Community and Media Relations, and Economic Development. “We wanted to make sure that Brockton residents and businesses still benefitted, so we worked with the municipality to identify these important projects and events. We look forward to seeing these fantastic initiatives come to fruition.”

Bruce Power’s Be a Light: Beating COVID-19 Together campaign will provide $1 million to work with public health, county and municipal governments, chambers of commerce, hospitals, local MPs and MPPs, and community organizations to redouble efforts to battle the pandemic. This will be achieved through support for public health communications, additional community protections, supporting buying local, mental and physical initiatives, and lending a helping hand by working with school breakfast programs, long-term care facilities, and community organizations.
