Concerned about Climate Change? Learn more at “The DaVinci Discovery Talks”

Named for one of the world’s great thinkers, Leonardo DaVinci who used both art and science to explore branches of knowledge, this four-part series will delve into the topic of “Climate Crisis and Hope for a Better Future” through academic lectures, documentary film and seminars.

Kicking off the series, popular speaker and mathematician Mike Sterling returns to the Museum, presenting global climate modeling from a mathematical perspective on Thursday, September 5th.

Mike has served as a senior mathematician and engineer at a number of research organizations such as General Motors Research Laboratories and the Computer Aided Design (CAD) research laboratories at Cambridge University in England. Among his many accolades, Mike has received The Canadian National Museum Award for volunteerism, Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for volunteerism, the Ontario Heritage Award and the Governor General’s Medal for his contributions.

On Tuesday, September 10 Art Grady, BA, MA, M.Ed, will lead an interactive talk and share a video lecture by Gwynne Dyer on “Climate Wars: The Fight for Survival as the World Overheats.” Gwynne is a freelance journalist, columnist, broadcaster and lecturer on international affairs with more than 20 years experience.

Then, on Wednesday, September 11th, Liz Zetlin, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, environmental poet and life-long community activist, presents “Resilience: Transforming our Community”, a climate change film featuring Bruce Grey stories that she co-produced and premiered earlier this spring.

Finally, the series will finish on September 12th when the Museum’s own Adrienne Mason presents a series of climate solutions and actions from the Arctic to Africa. This lecture will include high school student Maya Burhanpurkar’s documentary “400 PPM”, which includes testimonials from Margaret Atwood, Col. Chris Hadfield, Dr. Wade Davis, and Nobel laureate environmentalist Dr. Brad Bass, and explores the plight of climate change from a young person’s perspective. Projects such as Africa’s Great Green Wall will be explored as well as other international efforts to curb one of humanity’s most pressing issues.

The “DaVinci Discovery Series” take place on September 5, 10, 11, and 12, doors and cash bar open at 7:00 p.m. with presentations beginning at 7:30 p.m.
