The final designs for the new Markdale Hospital were submitted to the Ministry of Health and Long – Term Care on may 29th for approval.

This planning phase, Stage 3.2, expands on and adds final details to the architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical and landscape drawings for the new hospital.

“We’re inching closer to the finish line and are just about through the planning phase for our long – awaited new hospital for the Centre Grey community ,” said Lance Thurston, GBHS, President and CEO. “Thanks to the helpful input from our community, volunteers, staff and physicians, we have a well-designed facility that will serve our current needs, with the flexibility to adapt to additional demands in the future . It’s been an incredible community and GBHS team effort. ”

During Stage 3.2 , a final and comprehensive review was conducted of each department and space . Revisions and details have been incorporated into the lay out for medical equipment, interior and exterior finishes, and mechanical, electrical and IT services. The heating and cooling equipment , plus the building materials, have been chosen to increase energy efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

GBHS expects to hear back from the Ministry by the end of the summer. Once approved, the project will move onto Stage 4, which involves developing contracts, finalizing construction – ready plans, completing and issuing tender documentation, and ultimately, awarding construction contracts.

Given this timeline, construction is expected to begin in 2020 and will take approximately two years to complete.
