Bruce Power, with the generosity of 23 companies and organizations, will begin the distribution of 50,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to Bruce, Grey and Huron counties, and targeted areas of Ontario, including First Nations communities next week.
Bruce Power announced earlier this month it was securing general-purpose hand sanitizer refills from the Junction 56 Distillery in Stratford, which will ship the bottles to Three Sheets Brewing in the Town of Saugeen Shores for distribution – free of charge – to community organizations and others in need.
This will be the immediate, first stage, which will be followed by next steps towards sustainable, ongoing and local production in Port Elgin.
Ten organizations including TC Energy, the Power Workers’ Union, Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS), Nu-tech, ES Fox, BWXT Canada, GE Canada, the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, and the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario have provided sponsorship funding dollars for the initiative.
Additional funding is being redirected to this initiative from the return of 2020 sponsorship funding Bruce Power had provided to 14 community groups, organizations and programs throughout Grey, Bruce and Huron. The company provided an option for these groups to redirect funding to the fight against COVID-19 through this or other initiatives.
These organizations include Artful Hands (Ripley), Books in the Bruce, Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board (Celebrate Me and Enivrothon programs), Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund (Zurich), Grey Bruce One World Festival, Hepworth Anglers, Horse Friends of Saugeen Bluffs (Trails and Tunes events), Kincardine Pride, Kincardine Women’s Triathlon, Liv-A-Little (Port Elgin), Midwestern Ontario Rotary Music Festival, Skills Canada – Ontario, Town of Saugeen Shores (community programs) and We Care Grey Bruce (We Care Share program).

The Grey Bruce Health Unit will be among the first organizations to receive the sanitizer, and will distribute it to group homes, Community Living groups, hospices, women’s shelters, mental health organizations, a homeless shelter, youth detention living facilities, seniors housing facilities and home care organizations. Additional recipients include regional food banks, Indigenous communities, local fire departments and municipalities, small businesses and grocery stores, and a range of community groups.
