Pine River Watershed reforestation completed

The not-for-profit organization, Pine River Watershed Initiative Network (PRWIN) of the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA), completed tubexing and staking of a reforestation site on Saturday, November 10th.

The landowner in Huron Kinloss was kind enough to retire over six acres of farm land to donate as a reforestation site!  Last spring, PRWIN planted over 4,800 native tree seedlings over two days using a PRWIN director’s tractor in conjunction with our tree planting implement.  Varieties included red pine, white spruce, tamarack, white cedar, red maple, white and red oak, walnut, cherry and birch.

This fall as the tall grasses died down, PRWIN organized 260 tubex, stakes, and volunteers to help complete the project. Eight adult volunteers braved the cold biting winds and difficult land-locked terrain to ensure the most vulnerable seedlings were protected. The cost of protecting one tree seedling is around $4.00, so support resources had to be used wisely.
A special thanks goes out to Project Coordinator Tori Waugh for her leadership and Canadian Conservation Corps volunteer Jeremy Harbinson for his hard work and documentation of this event.
